A Family Run Pub in a Beautiful Spot Proudly Serving Our Community

Sometimes it takes one photograph to stop you in your tracks.

The other evening, my stepdaughter Ella, better known to many of us as the Junior Landlady, took a picture of the pub just at the right moment. The light was soft, the sky was doing something lovely, and the whole place looked exactly how it feels to us: warm, welcoming, and very much part of its surroundings.

It made me pause. In the middle of the busy days, the prep lists, the bookings, the school runs, the barrels, the food orders, and the last-minute jobs that always seem to appear, we realised again how lucky we are.

Lucky to have a pub in such a beautiful area. Lucky to welcome familiar faces through the door. Lucky to run a small family business that means so much more to us than bricks, beams, tables, and chairs.

Wide-angle view of a cosy country pub at sunset surrounded by trees and open sky.
Ella’s photo reminded us how special this place is.

The pub is part of our family life

Running a pub as a family means it is never just a job. It becomes part of the rhythm of life.

There are early mornings when the building is quiet and the coffee is strong. There are busy lunchtimes when the kitchen is in full swing. There are evenings full of laughter, clinking glasses, and the steady hum of people enjoying themselves. Then there are the quieter moments after closing, when the lights are turned down and the last chair is tucked back in.

For us, the pub sits right in the middle of family life.

Ella helping where she can, proudly carrying the title of Junior Landlady, is a big part of that. It reminds us that this place is not only something we work for, but something we are building together. Every small job, every welcome, every table laid, every plate served, every kind comment from a customer adds to that feeling.

There is a lot of work behind the scenes, but there is also a lot of pride.

We care about the food, the welcome, and the little details

As a small family-run business, we know people notice the details.

They notice when they are greeted properly at the door. They notice when a meal comes out hot, fresh, and made with care. They notice when the fire is glowing, the tables are clean, the atmosphere feels relaxed, and the team has time for a friendly word.

That is why we work so hard to get things right.

Good pub food should feel generous and comforting. It should suit the setting. It should be the kind of food people look forward to, whether they are popping in for a simple meal, celebrating with family, meeting friends, or winding down after a long week.

Service matters just as much. We want people to feel looked after without fuss. A proper pub welcome should feel natural. It should make regulars feel recognised and visitors feel like they have found somewhere worth coming back to.

For us, good hospitality is personal. It comes from caring about the people who walk through the door.

A beautiful area deserves a pub with heart

The photograph Ella took also reminded me how much our surroundings matter.

A pub does not stand apart from the place it belongs to. It reflects it. The walks nearby, the changing seasons, the local characters, the families who visit, the muddy boots, the Sunday lunches, the quick pints, the quiet corners, the celebrations, and the stories all become part of what the pub is.

We feel proud to be in such a lovely spot. On a bright day, the area has a way of lifting everyone’s mood. In winter, the pub becomes somewhere warm to escape the cold. In spring and summer, people want to linger a little longer, enjoy the light, and make the most of being somewhere beautiful.

That setting encourages us to do our best. If people have made the effort to visit, we want the experience to match the place.

The hard work is worth it because of the people

Anyone who has worked in hospitality knows it can be demanding. There are long days, late nights, unexpected problems, and moments when everything seems to happen at once.

But then there are the moments that make it worthwhile.

A family choosing us for a birthday meal. A couple returning because they enjoyed their last visit. A regular popping in for their usual. Someone complimenting the food. A child waving on the way out. A team member stepping in without being asked. Ella taking a photo that reminds us to look up and appreciate what is right in front of us.

Those moments matter.

We are proud to serve our community. Not in a grand way, but in the everyday way that a pub should. By being welcoming, consistent, and part of local life.

A good pub gives people somewhere to gather. Somewhere to talk. Somewhere to celebrate. Somewhere to rest. Somewhere to feel at home for a while.

That is what we are trying to create every day.

And of course, none of this would be possible without Kathryn by my side. Somehow, she manages to juggle being a mum to a teenager, the school runs and the demands of work, all while keeping a smile on her face!

No matter how busy things get, Kathryn always goes above and beyond to make sure everyone who walks through our doors feels welcome, comfortable and well looked after. She genuinely cares about making every visit to The Sycamore Tree the best it can be, and that dedication never goes unnoticed.

I'm incredibly grateful for everything she does, both behind the scenes and at the heart of the pub. We each bring something different to the table, and I really do think we make a great team!

Thank you for being part of our story

We do not take any of it for granted.

Every booking, every meal, every drink, every recommendation, every shared post, every kind word, and every return visit helps keep a small family-run pub going. It allows us to keep improving, keep welcoming people in, and keep doing what we love.

The picture Ella took was beautiful, but it captured more than the building. It captured a feeling. A reminder that this pub is ours to care for, and ours to share.

So from our family to everyone who supports us, thank you.

Thank you for choosing us. Thank you for cheering us on. Thank you for being patient on the busiest days and kind on the hardest ones. Thank you for helping make the pub what it is.

We will keep working hard to offer good food, friendly service, and a proper welcome in this beautiful spot we are lucky enough to call home.
